Boys and Girls Track Represent WH Well at States

*** The Boys' Indoor Track Team finished out the season at the All State Meet with an outstanding performance by the 4X800 meter relay team on Sunday at the Reggie Lewis Center. Dylan Foureau, Nate Stephansky, Pat Ryan and Mike Reimer all turned in personal best or near personal best times to improve on their Division II seed time by over seven seconds finishing in just over 8:15! The team landed outside the top ten receiving 11th place overall, but made a great run at a medal from the unseeded heat. Congratulations on a great season to the 4X800 crew
*** Abby Baker lead the way for the Lady Panthers breaking her own school record for the 3rd week in a row, placing 3rd in the 1000 with a time of 3:00.04 . This is the highest finish by a Panther girl in school history. The 4x800 team of Kesley Tierney, Gianna Cacciatore, Abby and Rachael Baker also crushed the 11 year old school record by 10 seconds, this was good enough for 6th place, the relay and Abby move onto New England's next Friday night at the Reggie. Nicole Galewski was 11th in the Long Jump and Rachael Baker was 9th in the mile.

Junior Dondre James recorded his 14tg double double of the season with 19 points and 14 rebounds to lift Whitman Hanson to a 69-58 win over Scituate in the championship game of the Rockland Athletic Supply Winter Classic. Senior captain Alex Nuby tossed in 11and sophomores Brian Feeney and Shane Devlin each had 9 for the Panthers who finish the season at 11-9. Junior John Foster had 19 points for Scituate who finishes at 10-8.

The boys basketball team lost at home last night, 78-57 against Duxbury. 13 different players scored for the Panthers in the loss including all 4 seniors. Corey Arseneau, John Sullivan, Jason Silva and Alex Nuby all found the scoring column. Junior Dondre James was the high scorer with 16 points. The team will play host to the Winter Classic Monday and Wednesday over break.

The Boys' Indoor Track Team competed well at the Division II Championship Meet on Thursday at the Reggie Lewis Center. The 4X400 team of Paul Kennedy, Anthony Iannone, Luke Laubacher, and Dom Cacciatore turned out their best performance of the season to finish within the top 10. Corey Burns also had a great day in the shot put improving on his personal best by over a foot with a distance of 44' 3". The athlete of the meet was Pat Ryan, who ran the 2 mile to earn a 7th place medal with a season best time and then came back in the very next event to help the 4X800 team earn a 5th place medal. Nate Stephansky also had an outstanding performance in the 4X800. The team will find out if they qualified for the All State Meet on Sunday night.

The girls track team came up short in it's quest for a division 2 championship. Leading for most of the meet the girls finished in 5th place, 10 points separated the top five teams. Leading the way was Abby Baker who broke her own school record in the 1000 and it was good enough for 2nd place. Rachael Baker was 4th in the mile, Nicole Galewski was 5th in the long jump and Sam Richner was 8th in the High Jump. The girls 4x800 team of Abby Baker, Gianna Cacciatore, Kelsey Tierney and Rachael Baker had one of the most exciting races of the night finishing 2nd by 5 one hundreds of a second to Central Catholic. Abby Baker and the 4x800 are automatic qualifiers for the all state meet next Sunday, the rest will have to wait and see if they are wild cards.

• The cheerleaders will look to defend their Patriot League championship tonight here at Whitman-Hanson. The competition starts at 6:30pm and with only 4 teams competing it will be brief, so don’t be late. Come out and support these talented hard working girls.
• The Whitman-Hanson wrestling team won the prestigious Division 2 sportsmanship award. This is an incredible honor which is selected by the officials. On the mat, senior captain Colin McSweeney has turned in one of the best seasons in school history as he is just 4 wins away from 100 in his career. After winning the south sectional championship, he advanced to the championship match in the division 2 state championships before losing in triple overtime in one of the most thrilling matches of the year. He moves on to all-states where he will have a shot at revenge and a chance to become a state champion. Also advancing to the state championships is junior captain Greg McGrath who also had a great showing finishing 5th. The team will compete in the team state tournament this weekend at Tsongas arena in Lowell. On a side-note, congratulations to former Whitman-Hanson principal and wrestling coach Bob Gay who was inducted into the Division 2 coaches Hall of Fame last weekend. It was a well deserved honor.
• The girls basketball team qualified for the state tournament last night defeating North Quincy 54-53 at home on senior night. Sophomore guard Marina Kelly nailed two free throws with 9.8 seconds left to give the win to the Panthers. Senior guard MacKenzie Hatfield led the Panthers with 15 points. Senior guard Cassie Chernicki added 12 points. Freshman Erin Clifford had a terrific all around game with 11 points and 16 rebounds.
• The boys basketball team has qualified for the state tournament once again. The team still has 3 games left, include tomorrow night when they host Duxbury on Senior night. Come out and show your support to our 4 fine seniors: Alex Nuby, Corey Arseneau, John Sullivan and Jason Silva. The team also plays host to the annual winter classic over break. The games are played on Monday and Wednesday (5 and 6:30pm each night) with Plymouth North, Scituate and Sandwich joining Whitman-Hanson.
• The Whitman-Hanson Special Olympics team, which has been mentored by the boys basketball team this winter and coached by Mr. Main, will be competing at halftime of the boys basketball game tomorrow night. This is always a special and inspirational night for the Whitman-Hanson community. WATD, 95.9Fm, will be here broadcasting the entire night.
• The boys and girls hockey teams have been eliminated from post season contention but both teams continue to work hard. The girls earned a 4-4 tie against Marshfield over the weekend. The boys will be participating in the Bishop Stang tournament this weekend (Friday and Saturday night).
• Our amazing track teams continue to make Whitman-Hanson proud:
o The girls track team had a great night at the Patriot League meet with 4 individual champions and one relay champion. Leading the way was Abby Baker in the 1000 meters, she broke the school record in a time of 3:03. • Spring sports will begin on Monday March 19th. All student-athletes should have signed up online and attended the pre-season meeting with their respective coaches. Any questions, see Mr. Rodgers asap.
• Thank you to all of those who participated in the Southwest Airlines raffle. The winner will be determined tonight based on the mass state lottery number even drawing. The first two digits determines the winner. All participants have been notified of their numbers. Good luck to everyone.
• Senior Corey Burns will be featured on an upcoming edition of A+ student on Channel 5 with David Brown. When we know the date of the airing of this feature we will pass it along. We are all very proud of Corey as he represents everything we want from our student-athletes here at Whitman-Hanson. He was recently accepted to Tufts University where he will be playing football.
• A special thank you to our outstanding faculty at Whitman-Hanson who go above and beyond to help our student-athletes succeed in the classroom. Our new academic probation program is making a real difference for our students. This winter we have 30% fewer students on probation and of the students who were on probation at progress reports this winter, 84% of them have raised their grade and 63% have raised it above a C-. This program is working so well because teachers take extra time to fill out progress reports and work with students to make up work while the coaches enforce the rules without regard to the player’s ability. We all believe the word student comes first for a reason when we talk about our student-athletes.

Girls Basketball Qualifies For Tourney

The Whitman-Hanson girls basketball defeated North Quincy 54-53 at home on senior night. Senior guard MacKenzie Hatfield led the Panthers with 15 points. Senior guard Cassie Chernicki added 12 points. Freshman Erin Clifford had a terrific all around game with 11 points and 16 rebounds. * Chris Boussy nets a hatt rick but it wasn't enough as Hanover beats WH boys hockey, 4-3.
*The girls hockey team lost to Barnstable Friday but recorded a 4-4 tie Saturday against Marshfield. Jackie Sullivan scored in both games while Kelsey Murray scored Saturday.
*Four Whitman-Hanson wrestlers competed in the Division 2 State Championships Saturday. Colin Bain, Jeff Bechen, Greg McGrath and Colin McSweeney all did Whitman-Hanson proud. McGrath took 5th place and earns a spot in all-states. Colin McSweeney made it all the way to the finals where he turned in one of the most spectacular matches in the tournament before losing in triple overtime. He will likely get another crack at his opponent at all-states. Whitman-Hanson was very proud of the effort. The team also was awarded the DIvision 2 Sportsmanship award.

Sophomore Shane Devlin exploded for 23 points and Junior Blake Hickey recorded a double double with 17 points and 15 rebounds to lift WHitman-Hanson over Silver Lake 79-64 in a Patriot League battle. Silver Lake grabbed a 1 point lead late in the third but Hickey and Devlin combined for 14 4th quarter points to help the Panthers take control of the game. Senior captain Alex Nuby chipped in with 11 and sophomore point guard Brian Feeney added 14 for the Panthers who improve to 9-7,8-3. Zach Tonello led the Lakers with 23 while Tucker Bouchard added 18.

* The boys basketball dropped a 72-71 thriller to 11th ranked Weymouth. Shane Devlin gave Wh a 1 pt lead with 5 secs left on his 3rd 3 of the 4th but the Wildcats got fouled with 3 seconds left and hit both free throws to get the win. Dondre James tossed in 19 points, Alex Nuby added 15 and Brian Feeney chipped in with 11.

The spring pre-season sports meetings will be held this Thursday at 2pm. These are mandatory meetings where your coaches will be giving you tryout information, preseason workout ideas, permission slips and other important information. Patriot League Boys Basketball

Sophomore point guard Brian Feeney scored 20 points and senior captain Alex Nuby tossed in 15 as Whitman-Hanson defeated Hingham 73-62. Sophomore Shane Devlin drilled 4 3 pointers including one on the final seconds of the first half which erased a 1-point deficit and gave the Panthers (8-6, 7-3) a 2 point lead at the break. Devlins other 3's cam on a key 2 minute span late on the fourth quarter to put the game away. Junior Dondre James recorded his 9th double double of the year with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Nick Passios led Hingham (9-7, 5-4) with 20.

The Boys’ Indoor Track team had a very close meet vs. Hingham for the league championship on Tuesday night at the Reggie Lewis Center, which resulted in a 57-43 loss. The team gave a great effort running and competing for personal best times and marks in nearly all events. The loss puts the Panthers at 5-1 on the season as they prepare for the Patriot League Meet next week. First place finishers include:

Dylan Foureau in the 600 meter

Girls Track Just Shy of League Title

The girls track team came up short tonight in it's bid for a championship losing 57-43 to Hingham. The girls broke school records in both relays, the 4x200 team of Danielle Spivack, Karen Dempsey, Lilly Higgins and Nicole Galewski broke the 5 year old record not to be out done the 4x400 team of Melanie Collins, Haley Bukow, Hannah and Haley Wells broke the 3 year old mark. Abby Baker was a double winner winning both the mile and 1000, Melanie Collins won the Long Jump and, Sam Richner won the High Jump. Twenty girls ran their fastest times of the season. The girls finish 5-1 on the season. Next up is the league championship.

WHP 5 Marshfield 3. Jane Morrisette got her 1st of 3 goals tonight with a nice 1st period wrap around goal. Her second goal was a great wrist shot that just cleared the cross bar and her third goal was another wrap around. Kelsey Murray jumped on a rebound and scored and Jackie Sullivan made a great move on the Marshfield goalie and shot the puck in. Defensive play from Paige Caswell, Kerry Coady Maddy Reardon, Giana Deacetis Ali Macleod were key in keeping the Marshfield attack at bay. Outstanding offensive play and great backchecking by Ally Webster, Nicole Halloran, Michaela McIsaac, Victoria Burke, Sophie Nogueira, Cassidy Peinert. Missing from tonight's line up was Kristen Miglietta as she injured her knee last Friday against Canton, but was there cheering the team on. A great game by Melissa Hatch in the net came up big with some great saves. A great team effort.

The Whitman-Hanson boys basketball team upset NQ tonight 52-39, giving the Red Raiders their first league loss. Junior Dondre James led the Panthers with 17 points and 14 rebounds. The Panthers received big nights from their two big men as Juniors Blake Hickey (8 points 13 rebounds) and Craig Boure (9 pts, 10 rebounds) combined for 17 points and 23 rebounds.

The Boys' Indoor Track team had an excellent showing at the Division II State Relays on Sunday, finishing in 6th place overall. There were great performances throughout the day with 10 different athletes earning State Relay medals in a variety of events. The highlights of the meet were definitely the 4X800 and Distance Medley teams scoring from the unseeded heats. Scoring this way is pretty difficult because the athletes have to run on time and hope that it beats out performances in the seeded section. The 4X800 was actually able to place 3rd, which is amazing. Below are the medal winners, their events and times on the day:

Steve Croghan, Anthony Iannone, Andrew Clemens, and John Caliri hurdled to 4th place and were just a little over a half second off of the school record (28.59 sec)

Mike Reimer, Anthony Iannone, Dom Cacciatore, and Dylan Foureau finished in 4th place for the Sprint Medley (3:47.61)

Pat Mulrey, Dom Cacciatore, Nathan Stephansky, and Pat Ryan finished in 6th place for the Distance Medley (11:06.12)

Dylan Foureau, Nathan Stephansky, Pat Ryan, and Pat Mulrey finished in 3rd place for the 4X800 Meter Relay (8:25.11)

Record Setting Day for Girls Indoor Track

The girls track team broke a state relay record and a school record on Sunday at the division 2 state relay meet. The girls distance medley team of Gianna Cacciatore, Mel Collins, Abby and Rachael Baker broke the state record by 5 seconds in a time of 12:38 this was the 11th fastest time in the country. The Shuttle Dash relay team of Nicole Galewski, Paulette Ianone, Lilly Higgins and Danielle Spivack broke the 6 year old record by 1 second in a time of 25.89.

No Mistake By The Lake for Boys Basketball

Whitman-Hanson erased a 10 point deficit to win at Silver Lake, 62-56.
Sophomore Brian Feeney and Senior Captain Alex Nuby scored 11 apiece as the
Panthers improved to 3-2 in the Patriot League and 4-4 overall. Junior Tucker
Bouchard followed up his 27 point performance from Tuesday with 24 tonight for

The Panthers came out swinging in a very close meet vs. Pembroke on Wednesday picking up 1st and 2nd in the shot put with Cory Burns and Ian MacDonald, in the mile with Pat Ryan and Pat Mulrey and in the hurdles with Anthony Iannone and Steve Croghan. After a great performance in the 1000 by Mike Reimer and Nate Stephansky, as well as Dylan Foreau in the 600, and Dom Cacciatore in the 55, the meet came down to the final events with WH pulling out a 57-43 victory over Pembroke. It was an incredible night with career best times in nearly all events. The team is now 5-0 on the season and looks ahead to the Division II Relays on Sunday.

The girls track team defeated Pembroke tonight 65-34 to improve to 5-0 and set up a winner take all with Hingham in two weeks. Leading the way was double winners Rachael Baker mile and 2 mile and Nicole Galewski Long Jump and Dash, also recording victories for the lady Panthers, Abby Baker in the 1000, Sam Richner in the High Jump, Mel Collins in the Hurdles, Gianna Cacciatore in the 600 and the 4x400 relay team.

Whitman-Hanson defeated Quincy in a Patriot League battle 47-40 in overtime. Senior guard Cassie Chernicki led the Panthers with 15 points. Senior Brittney Porter and freshman Erin Clifford each added 10 points in the victory. The Panthers are now 5-2 (4-0 in the league). Kiley McDonald led the Presidents with 22 points.

Senior Captain Alex Nuby (11 points) drained a 3 as time expired in regulation and sophomore Zach Downey scored 5 of his 21 (all in the second half) in overtime as WH beats Quincy 69-66. Sophomore Shane Devlin and Junior Dondre James tossed in 12 points for Whitman-Hanson which improves to 2-2 in the Patriot League and 3-4 overall. Junior Tino Goncalves was the games high scorer for Quincy with 23 points.

Boys Track Wins Again

The boys’ track team had a spectacular day at the Auerbach Freshman/Sophomore meet on Saturday. Officials said that it was the largest competition of its kind ever run in Massachusetts but the Panthers came ready to compete and were not intimidated by the huge field of athletes. In fact, WH athletes ran, jumped, and threw for personal bests across the board all day long. Justin Hall and Jake Roumanos competed in the shot put, Ricky Schneider and Darren Bickle had outstanding long jump performances, Anthony Caliri and Stephen Stephansky ran for personal best times in the 300 and 600, Brian Sheppard and Nate Almeida improved on their mile times, and Pat Brett improved on his 2 mile time by about 20 seconds. It was a great day overall and the whole team now looks forward to the meet vs. Pembroke on Wednesday.
